Redcoats and Rebels 2024

Redcoats and Rebels Recap

The First NH attended Redcoats and Rebels at Old Sturbridge Village starting on Friday, August 2 thru Sunday, August 4.  Our camp was set up on the village common under a large shade tree.  The tree proved to be a good friend as we braved the sunshine and humidity on Saturday and showers later Sunday that resulted in cooler temperatures.  We took home some wet canvas, but the cool relief was welcomed.

The battles on Saturday and Sunday were fought with much energy despite the warm temperatures.  The battles this year were different with the troops and spectators deployed differently from the past.  This allowed for interesting and challenging troop maneuvering.  Bob M. served as First Sergeant of the company to which we were assigned and did a wonderful job. The troops found the battles to be most satisfying.

The women outdid themselves this weekend and put on a real show of their outdoor cooking skills. Our thanks to Deb for eggs, sausage, cantaloupe and breads for Saturday breakfast, to Cathy and Jen for Saturday lunch of meats, salad, breads and fruit, to Karen for Saturday dinner of steak pie, roasted potatoes, and blueberry pie, to Robin for Sunday breakfast of blueberry pancakes and ham, and Karen, Kay, and Robin for Sunday lunch of 18th century chicken, salad, bread, amd peach cobbler.  The ladies also had 18th century teas on both Saturday and Sunday with cucumber, strawberry, and fig sandwiches, homemade ice cream, and cookies served. We never go hungry at an event with food like this!  Many thanks to Karen for coordinating the commissary and to all the ladies who worked so hard to prepare such wonderful food.

John and Kay’s granddaughter, Cassidy attended her first event and got to experience 18th century camp life. She helped with the commissary and Deb taught her how to make cord on a lucet.  Cassidy hopes to meet our other young ladies, Meredith and Madeline.

Despite some unsettled weather, all who attended found the weekend to be satisfying.  Much good fellowship was had by all.
