Saratoga Living History 2024

Saratoga National Historical Park Recap

The First NH Regiment traveled to Saratoga National Historical Park for a living history weekend lasting from Friday, September 20 thru Sunday September 22 with the Third Massachusetts and the Tenth Massachusetts Regiments. The First NH camped at the Neilson Farm. This site is nearly where the First NH was originally camped on the Saratoga Battlefield during the Fall of 1777.

The First NH was part of the first soldiers involved in the battle at Freeman’s Farm on September 19, 1777. Some two weeks later the First NH was among the attacking force at the Wheatfield which routed the British and led to the British defeat and surrender at Saratoga. The First NH lost more men than any other American regiment during the battles of Saratoga, with nearly 100 officers and men killed or wounded.

Our weekend started on Friday afternoon with Park Ranger Bill giving an extensive tour with narration of the various sites within the Park. During the rest of the weekend the First NH interacted with the public with various living history demonstrations that included drilling, musket firing, cooking, sewing, and other camp crafts. Soldiers and Campfollowers discussed their roles during the war and related the history of the Saratoga conflict.

Again, we ate very well over the weekend as the women served some wonderful food. We enjoyed eggs, sausage, and various breads for breakfast. For Saturday lunch we had a wonderful pork roast, cooked vegetables, roasted pumpkin and cornbread. For Sunday lunch we were treated to various kinds of meat pies, vegetables, and salad. Wonderful apple crisp and cookies completed the meals. It was obvious that much forethought and hours of preparation were put in to make such wonderful meals. I know that I can speak for the rest of the attendees when I express appreciation for the efforts of all of the women for the meals served at this event.

The weather over the weekend was spectacular. We had bright sunshine with puffy clouds for most of the weekend, while back home it was overcast and misty. The nights were clear and being so far removed from modern lights we were able to enjoy the glory of the night sky as we gathered around the evening campfire. Our campfire discussions were lively and interesting and good fellowship was had by all.

Our weekend at Saratoga National Historical Park was truly special. The park and rangers were very hospitable. It was inspiring to be camped on such hallowed ground. Through the presence of the recreated First NH Regiment we were able to celebrate the efforts of those before us who served so nobly during the Battles of Saratoga.
